When I had my first individual sessions, I never imagined I would end up teaching it. At that time, Leeds College of Music offered one-to-one sessions to all music students, and I happened to be there on a year-long placement.<\/p><p>I later completed the three-year Alexander Technique training primarily for myself, for my own personal development, rather than with the intention of becoming a teacher. However, I soon felt a passion for sharing with others what the technique was allowing me to see and understand.<\/p><p>I suffered from back pain for many years and eventually gave up playing the piano after a long period of frustration. I know what it means for a musician to play in pain, with excessive tension, feeling blocked and not knowing what is happening. With that tension, I couldn&#8217;t progress, or if I did, it was with immense effort. I used to think that playing with tension was just part of who I was and that it couldn&#8217;t be changed. I consulted various piano teachers and tried many therapies over the following years. It was a long search during which I found myself drifting further and further away from music.<\/p><p>However, today I feel grateful to have walked that path because what awaited me went much further than I could have imagined. Beyond resolving that tension when playing, I was able to bring that personal development into my daily life. I discovered that we can regulate our muscle tone at any moment\u2014to stop, breathe, and feel. I am still training and discovering within myself everything that the Alexander Technique has to offer. She is bilingual, which made instructions in English easy to follow. I learned and practiced the technique for most of two years, having sessions once a week.  I had previously had other types of body work, but this practice is more about not doing than doing.  The regular practice and reminders gradually increased my proprioceptive awareness.  This has been very transformative for the way I carry myself, as well as how, as a musician, I play my instrument, the piano.  I became more aware of micro tensions in my body and stopped using muscles that were not needed in performing an action. The practice improved respiration and created more flow in my movement and playing.\nIt takes time to change habitual patterns of movement and weekly sessions were my regular times to check-in with Germana for observation, correction and reminders.   I highly recommend her work because she is very enthusiastic about the efficacy of the Alexander Technique and is committed to teaching it.  Germana embodies the technique.
